‘Mila’s Monarch Migration’ (2024)
In 2024, as a part of my Book Illustration university project, I wrote and illustrated the book ‘Mila’s Monarch Migration’, a children’s book following three young Monarch butterfly siblings on their southerly migration from Canada to Mexico in the autumn.
I used watercolour to illustrate the story and utilized a child-friendly, cartoon-like art style to represent the butterflies and landscapes.
The book highlights some of the challenges that real Monarch butterflies face on their migrations- from the threats of predators like birds to the increasing struggle they face to locate their destination, the Oyamel Fir forests of the trans volcanic belt region of Mexico, due to heavy deforestation by mankind.
I hoped that the book would not only teach children something new about Monarchs but also inspire them to want to help them where they can.
The interior pages of the book were made from recylced paper.
